Art Basel Arrives in Doha: A New Geography of Art

Words by Allegra Salvadori

For the first time, Art Basel — the world’s most influential contemporary art fair — is coming to the Middle East. From February 5–7, 2026, Art Basel Qatar will unfold across M7 and Msheireb Downtown Doha, transforming the city’s design district into a living stage for global art and ideas. Presented in partnership with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) and QC+, this new fair marks a historic expansion of the Art Basel ecosystem — and a defining moment for the region’s cultural landscape.

Guided by the artistic direction of Wael Shawky, the inaugural edition is built around the theme Becoming.” In Shawky’s hands, the concept becomes a poetic meditation on transformation — how humanity reshapes the ways we live, believe, and create meaning. “The Gulf lies at the heart of this story,” he says, “where oral traditions flow into digital networks and ancient trade routes return as new pathways of culture and exchange.”

Departing from the traditional booth format, Art Basel Qatar will take an open exhibition approach, inviting 87 galleries from 31 countries to respond to the curatorial framework. The result promises to blur boundaries between gallery and narrative, commerce and contemplation. More than half of the participating artists hail from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia — a striking affirmation of the region’s growing creative power.

Among them are Etel Adnan, Ali Banisadr, Simone Fattal, Ali Cherri, Meriem Bennani, and Iman Issa, shown alongside established international names including Christo, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Philip Guston. Galleries from across the Gulf — such as Hafez Gallery, Tabari Artspace, and Saleh Barakat Gallery — will stand in dialogue with global heavyweights like Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, Pace Gallery, and David Zwirner, illustrating the fair’s balance between regional identity and international scope.

Beyond the market, Art Basel Qatar signals something deeper: a new geography of art that places Doha at the center of exchange between East and West. In a city already defined by its cultural vision — from the Museum of Islamic Art to the newly inaugurated M7 — the fair becomes not just an event, but a statement of intent.
Here, art is not only seen — it is experienced as a force of becoming.
