What If a Café Was Designed Not Around Coffee, but Around Sound

At MATTER and SHAPE during Paris Fashion Week, Bang & Olufsen does not simply present sound, it builds a café. Set within the Jardin des Tuileries, the pop up rethinks the café as a designed environment where listening, materiality, and atmosphere are brought into alignment, inviting visitors to slow down and inhabit sound as part of everyday ritual.

Conceived in collaboration with Home in Heven, the space translates Bang and Olufsen’s design language into an immersive setting. At its centre, a full scale café bar modelled after the Beomaster 3000 anchors the project, shifting an iconic audio object into an architectural gesture. Around it, the Beoplay H100 headphones define a more intimate landscape of listening. Engineered with studio grade microphones and advanced noise cancellation, they transform the surrounding environment into a controlled acoustic field, where sound is experienced with precision and depth.

This dialogue between object and space continues through the presence of the Beogram 4000c turntable, displayed within a luminous sculptural shelf. Here, analogue sound is not treated as nostalgia, but as continuity, reinforcing the brand’s century long commitment to craftsmanship, material integrity, and enduring design.

Home in Heven’s hand blown glass interventions introduce a surreal, tactile dimension, framing the café with their signature forms. “The intersection of beauty and functionality is becoming rare,” observes Peter Dupont.Function can give an object integrity, without it, beauty can feel superficial.” Through this collaboration, glass becomes both structure and atmosphere, shaping how the space is perceived and inhabited.

The experience extends into taste through Atelier September, where Frederik Bille Brahe brings a menu rooted in Scandinavian simplicity. Minimalist vegetarian dishes echo the same values of clarity, craftsmanship, and restraint, reinforcing the coherence of a project where sound, design, and flavour operate as one.

For Breanna Box, this coherence is tied to a broader idea of longevity. “What built brands like Bang and Olufsen into design powerhouses wasn’t safety, it was daring ideas executed beautifully and functionally.” In this temporary café, that philosophy takes form, where design moves beyond display and becomes something to be lived, even if only for a moment.
